About Liberty Hill Cemetery
Historical Association
Liberty Hill Cemetery is a historic cemetery located in the heart of Woodway, Texas of about 1-1/4 acres. With 192 grave sites, according to TX. collection B.U. The first burial was in 1910. The last burial was in 1946. The court closed the cemetery in 1959.
It has been an abandoned final resting place for many early members of the community for over a century, including many black and Hispanic (according to TX. collection B.U.) people as well as at least three World War I veterans.
However, due to neglect, the cemetery had not been properly maintained for over 100 years, Richard Maker assembled a team of volunteers and initiated the effort to clear out the overgrown cemetery in October of 2023.
Today, Liberty Hill Cemetery is a Historical Association, and an important part of Woodway's history and a peaceful final resting place for those who came before us.
We are in dire need of volunteers to assist on this cemetery cleanup. We need to get respect back to these forgotten souls. Plans are being made to have dedicated days each month, for those volunteers (16yrs & older) to keep LIBERTY HILL CEMETERY HISTORIAL ASSOCIATION in shape.
Your volunteering can help us continue to restore and maintain Liberty Hill Cemetery Historical Association, for future generations. When we have a scheduled cleanup day let us know if you can help with equipment to help clear, or a pickup to take refuse to the dump, or refreshments for those working. Anything is helpful during the one or two days of cleanup we schedule.
We welcome volunteers (16yrs and above) and of all backgrounds help us with cemetery restoration, and educational programming. PLEASE, Join us in preserving this important piece of Woodway's history.
